Dodging the Rain

The weather wasn’t so kind today, but we managed to dodge the rain to get two rows of potatoes in (King Edwards) and a lot more weeding done. We also harvested three sticks of rhubarb and a test onion! Oh, and some sage… it is going mad so need to find a good way to dry it or freeze it – any tips? Hopping around us for much of the morning was the friendly robin, loving the fact that we were unearthing a lot of worms for him… greedy little thing!

Onions, digging and a cute little robin

What started out as a chilly morning ended up with lovely warm sunshine We got a row of onions in (Sturon) – fingers crossed these will be ok as we have no idea what we’re doing when it comes to onions! The last time we had them they were already planted when we got the plot. Of course there was more digging, that’ll never end will it?! We do need to create some sort of supporting structure for them, but so far we’ve left them alone… need to think about the best option. Nearly had a disaster with potatoes before they were even planted… we’d left them chitting away in their bag, but Lisa’s husband thought...

Measurements and Moving Ants

Back up to the plot this morning, we bagged up the rubbish and dug a few more weeds out. We attacked the ants with Nippon powder, so hopefully they’ll move or die! Measuring up, the plot is in two sections: one is 5m x 5.8m, the other 5m x 3.75m (the previous owner still has part of one side – we’re hoping we may be able to have the extra bit soon too!). Wildlife spotted: Several blackbirds A robin Ants galore! A snail with a very pretty shell! A slug. As we’re off on holiday, it’ll be about three weeks before we’re back on site, but we’re taking our Vegetable & Herb Expert book and our measurements to plan out what we can sow when we get back!
