Corn & Courgettes

Today we planted nine sweetcorn plants given to us by our allotment neighbour yesterday… they’re best in a square so that they pollinate, so we dug over a weedy patch to fit them in. They’re diddy little things at the moment, but they’ll get big!
The courgettes and squashes we planted last week aren’t looking too [...]

Summer Squashes

We sowed some seeds this evening – we were given a pack of ‘Summer Squashes’ (a collection of squashes and courgettes) by a friend, so we have:
‘Black Beauty’
‘Golden Zucchini’
‘Lebanese’
‘De Nice a Rond Fruit’
‘Patty Pan’
‘Yellow Scallop’
We’re not renowned for our success with seeds so fingers crossed!!

Planting Potatoes (a work in progress)

Once we managed to get rid of the weeds and grass (mainly couch grass, grrrr) on a small section of this year’s potato plot, we dug two ‘trenches’ to plant the seed potatoes. Last year we had courgettes, beans, kale (what we thought was broccoli!) and lettuce here – if that makes a difference!

Seeds & Potatoes have arrived!

Our seeds and potatoes arrived… we ordered them through our allotment association from DT Brown (works out so much cheaper if you do this!).

Radish – Scarlet Globe (plus two half packs left over from last year [...]

Our weeds…

This is what we were up against yesterday! Not too bad as most of it was that annoying ground covering tangly stuff and the half-dead weeds pulled up quite easily!
In the foreground are our leeks – now lifted and mostly eaten (Chicken & Leek Pie and Roasted Veg) – and our courgette ‘Ambassador’, which produced [...]

Sunday Crop

Yesterday Lisa picked:
7 sweetcorn – though some were not quite ready, so we need to make sure the ends are really brown and manky before we pick!
6 onions, including the red one!
Several beans – yum! We like these raw, often they don’t make it into the pan.
One little courgette – unfortunately two courgettes had been [...]

Siobhan’s Whoppers!

Just look at Siobhan’s whoppers!
Oh, that’s the courgettes we’re talking about by the way
The courgettes are doing so well – we cut these two today and we have at least another five growing. Just imagine if Tony hadn’t killed the second plant!!

Wednesday’s Harvest

We harvested quite a bit this evening….
The onions are great and at the moment we’re pulling them as we need them rather than doing a complete harvest. We may need to harvest them all soon though, so we need to think about the best way to store them.
Tomatoes are looking a little sickly, but we [...]
